About Ultra Zoom

Ultra Zoom is a hover-to-zoom extension for Chrome and Firefox, built and maintained by Boden McHale at Lost Rabbit Digital LLC. It is a one-person product: the same person writes the plugins, answers the support email, and decides what ships. This page exists so you know who that is before you install something that runs on every page you visit.

Who builds it

Boden McHale — Founder, Lost Rabbit Digital LLC. Ultra Zoom is his work end to end: the 54+ site plugins, the on-device upscaling pipeline, the Cloudflare licensing worker, and this website. He writes the engineering posts on the blog under his own name rather than a company byline, because a claim about how software handles your data should be attributable to a person.

Why it exists

Hover-to-zoom is a twenty-year-old idea with a bad history. The original Hover Zoom was caught logging the URL of every page its users visited and selling that data; the forks that replaced it inherited the userbase but not much maintenance, and Manifest V3 broke several of them outright. The category was left with millions of people who wanted a simple feature and no maintained, trustworthy option.

Ultra Zoom is the attempt at the boring version of that: hover an image, see it at full resolution, and have nothing leave your machine. Read the history of the Hover Zoom scandal or the zero-knowledge architecture write-up for the long form.

How it is funded

By subscriptions, and nothing else. There is no advertising, no affiliate injection, no data brokerage, and no investor who needs the numbers to go up faster than the product can honestly grow. 36 of the 54 documented site plugins work on the free tier forever; 18 sites that need dedicated maintenance ship with Ultra Zoom Pro, alongside power features like neural upscaling and unlimited hover history.

That funding model is the reason the privacy claims are credible. An extension that makes money from subscriptions has no reason to build a telemetry endpoint; an extension that is free forever with no revenue eventually does.

Track record

Ultra Zoom is on version 1.1.531, last updated 2026-09-09, with 6 documented feature releases since launch. Every one is listed on what’s new with the version number it shipped in, so you can check the claim rather than take it.
